  1. The principle of hot air balloon flight

  The ability of hot air balloons to fly into the sky is actually based on a very simple scientific principle - hot air is less dense than cold air. In essence, hot air is less dense than cold air and is relatively light in weight. 1 cubic decimeter of air weighs about 1 gram, but if heated to 37.8 degrees Celsius, the weight will be reduced by about 0.25 grams at the same volume. In other words, when the air per cubic decimeter is heated to 37.8 degrees Celsius, it can carry a load of 0.25 grams. The volume of a standard RQ7-3A balloon is 2180 cubic meters. According to the capacity of 0.25 grams per cubic decimeter, it can be calculated that RQ7-3A can carry 545 kilograms. This is just based on 37.8 degrees Celsius. The higher the temperature, the larger the volume, and the greater the load-bearing value. This is why the hot air balloons we see are all fat guys with big belly.

  2. Hot air balloon structure and principle

  Nowadays, most hot air balloons are made of long strips of nylon silk, reinforced with sutures in the middle. Nylon is very suitable for hot air balloons because it is not only light in material, but also quite strong, and has a high melting point. The hem of the balloon bottom is made of a fireproof cloth made of special materials to prevent the flame from igniting the hot air balloon.

  (1) During the flight, in order to keep the hot air balloon from falling off, the pilot needs to intermittently heat the air in the balloon. Heating is achieved using a burner located below the balloon. When the air in the balloon gradually cools down, the driver needs to determine the temperature to which the balloon is heated.

  (2) It should be said here that heating is not continuous, because the balloon material is essentially fire-resistant compared to other materials, and is not completely fire-resistant. Therefore, the heating time needs to be determined according to the situation, and it is not completely heated to the limit in one breath.

  (3) In the balloon and under the burner, we are the common position where the driver and passenger stand, which we call it the hanging basket. The hanging basket is generally woven by rattan strips and is distributed and connected to the balloon by multiple steel cables at the four corners of the hanging basket. Depending on the use of the hot air balloon, the hanging basket can be designed as a single-open door, a double-open door or multiple-open doors.

  (4) In the hanging basket, in addition to passengers and drivers, there are also important conditions required for hot air balloon flight - liquefied petroleum gas. The liquefied petroleum gas is installed by a special steel bottle and placed in four corners of the hanging basket to fix it. During the flight, these four cylinders are used to provide the power of hot air balloons to fly, and also play a role in stabilizing the center of gravity.

  (5) In addition to these parts, the hot air balloon also has a thin rope to open the exhaust valve on the top of the balloon. The driver pulls the connected string and the exhaust valve shrinks because the lift and gravity form a pressure relative to each other, and the principle of hot air rising. A part of the air can be squeezed out from the balloon to reduce the internal temperature, so that the hot air balloon will tend to stagnate and decrease, which is also the method used by most hot air balloons when landing.
